The purpose of taking the IELTS test

IELTS is a test taken by individuals who want to study or work in English-speaking countries. It is conducted to analyze their ability to bridge the linguistic barrier and communicate effectively in foreign countries. Although IELTS is not required for admission to many overseas universities, students should be aware that failing to take the test may reduce their chances of obtaining a student VISA because officials will not have confirmation of their English proficiency.

It is also important to note that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) accepts it as the only English Language Test for visa applicants applying to universities both outside and inside the UK. Most universities in the United Kingdom and Australia and thousands of universities in other English-speaking countries recognize IELTS scores.

Importance of IELTS score:

Foreign universities recognize IELTS scores for perceiving both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Moreover,  professional universities require a band score to determine whether a person can compete with the program’s medium of instruction, which is English. IELTS scores are required for courses delivered in English in many non-English speaking countries.

Universities usually set the minimal IELTS requirements that applicants must meet to be considered for admission. As a result, students who have an ideal IELTS score equal to or higher than the minimum criteria have a better chance of getting into university than those who have an IELTS score below the basic standard.

Admittance will get rejected if one’s band score falls from the required band score of  0.5. As a result, a student applying for admission to their preferred university should check the minimal IELTS score mentioned in their admission standards and strive to achieve an IELTS score equal to or greater than the minimal score.   A good grade will give students more confidence that they will be able to complete the courses without any linguistic difficulties.

  • You’ll get a certificate that’s recognized all over the world. You will receive a test record recognized and certified by thousands of organizations around the globe, including businesses, universities, professional groups, and government agencies, if you take an IELTS test.
  • If you want to study abroad, keep in mind that many universities accept IELTS exam results throughout the world and all universities and colleges in the United Kingdom.
  • You should take the Academic IELTS test if you plan an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program.
  • Providing documentation of your language skills is crucial in acquiring a visa to work in another country.
  • As a result, higher IELTS scores are required for advanced degree programs such as Masters and PhDs.

How band score is calculated

Each skill (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) will receive a band score, as well as an overall band score. The average of all the skills is the overall band score. As an example, look at the table below.

Overall test results are calculated to the closest 0.5 or whole band score, as specified on the IELTS website. If your final result is not an exact 7.5, your score will be rounded up or down to the nearest whole or half score, whichever is closest. Following are some instances of how this works in IELTS:

  • If your overall band score is 6.1, it is calculated as 6 because 6.1 is nearest to 6.
  • If you have obtained 6.86, your final score is calculated as 7 because nearest to the 6.86 is 7.
  • Your score will be boosted to 6.5 if your overall score is an average of 6.25. Because the score of 6.25 falls exactly between bands 6 and 6.5, IELTS will round it up to the nearest score of 6.5.
